I am so excited to host Kazue Yoshikawa - an internationally renowned Sashiko teacher, designer and artist at my studio at The Australian Wool Store where she will be teaching her sashiko envelope bag workshop.
Kazue Yoshikawa is based in Kyoto, Japan, where she runs SASHIKO.LAB - a traditional atelier which showcases sashiko, a centuries-old Japanese stitching technique passed down from mother to daughter.
In the old days when fabrics were expensive and precious, farmers and peasants stitched sashiko on their clothes to reinforce the fabric. They also used sashiko to patch up the fabric such as cotton blankets.
Even though sashiko only requires running stitches, there is a wide variety of patterns produced in the motifs of nature.
Those geometric designs that developed out of poverty are now attracting people all over the world with its simplicity and beauty.
Whether you're a beginner or looking to deepen your skills, this immersive experience promises inspiration, creativity and hands on learning.
This workshop is designed to enable participants to create their own envelope bag, with expert guidance from Kazue. No experience is necessary.

Please arrive 15 minutes early. Parking is provided on the property.
Cost: $250 per person
What to bring: For this workshop, Kazue requests that you bring a piece of fabric approximately 35cm x 35cm of your own, to line the inside of your envelope.
What will be provided: Tuition by Kazue and materials, including the cloth (choice of three colours: red, blue, and green), white thread, pattern, and finishing instructions if not completed in class.
Morning tea will be provided.
